At an information event on 8 December 2023, the municipality of Rheinwald informed residents about the Rheinwald Resort.
The project aims to secure a sustainable future for the community, among other things by creating new beds, thereby promoting the economic development of the region and increasing the attractiveness of Rheinwald as a tourist destination. In particular, the resort is intended to strengthen the Splügen-Tambo mountain railways, create new jobs and generate added value for the entire region.
Strengthening sustainable tourism development
In recent years, Rheinwald has experienced below-average growth compared to the canton of Graubünden in terms of both population and tourism.
The focus of the location development strategy for Viamala/Central Graubünden is on strengthening hospitality by offering a range of different types of accommodation. The proposed Rheinwald Resort is a key component of this development strategy.
Year-round activity hub with serviced apartments and camping
The Rheinwald Resort is planned as a year-round activity hub and is expected to be open at least 300 days a year. The main elements of the resort – ‘village’, ‘plinth’, ‘camping’ and ‘sports/leisure’ – can accommodate up to 500 apartment guests and 250 camping guests. Taking local architecture into account, the buildings will be constructed mainly from wood and stone, with the design coming from the internationally renowned architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron in Basel.
A diverse meeting place for locals, overnight guests and day visitors
The Rheinwald Resort forms an interface between north and south – for all age groups and ideally located. The focus is also on revitalising the eventful history of the mountain pass village of Rheinwald. The resort’s piazza becomes a meeting place and offers space for locals and guests to exchange ideas and get together. A wide variety of elements, including serviced apartments, camping & glamping, a ski school and ski storage, a sports shop, restaurant, bistro and bar, sports and leisure activities, a daycare centre and more, are tailored to the needs of guests and locals alike.
Development partners involved
Rheinwald Resort AG is leading the development and implementation of the project, supported by the municipality and in close cooperation with project developers Quant AG, Flims, and Contoura AG, Chur. Stauffer & Studach, Chur, is responsible for spatial development. The project team is convinced that the Rheinwald Resort will bring significant added value to the region, its residents and visitors.
